A new study on 1 Peter

A verse by verse study of 1 Peter to understand the love of God, the restoration and hope of Jesus, and the application for those of us who are here, but not home. We'll dive deep into this beautiful and timeless letter from Peter to remind us of the promises of God and our individual roles right where we are - in the displaced, the hard, the hurting, the seemingly hopeless places. We'll be reminded how big and good and powerful our God is, and that our true home is real and secure. We have the power to live big and bold right where we are, to be overcomers and believers who do life well, even in the hard.

  • Week 6: 1 Peter 4:12-19, 1 Peter 5:1-7, 1 Peter 5:8-14
Further down on this page, we have included a sample flow for your small group time together.

Why 1 Peter?

"...Peter’s writing to Gentiles, Gentiles living in regions; if you put them together are now what we would call, Turkey. And these Christians are suffering. There's no evidence that they're suffering government-decreed persecution or persecution that’s physical. But they're in a place and a culture where their faith is misunderstood, where they're facing religious discrimination, feeling under threat, mocked and verbally abused. And I think that's much like the conditions we're living in now where Christianity is largely misunderstood, not respected, and it feels like it's under threat.

And in that kind of culture, Peter is addressing the question, “What is the most dangerous thing for a Christian living in this kind of culture?” And you would think his answer would be, “Well, it's an increasing threat against Christianity.” That's not his answer. His answer is the most dangerous thing is “identity amnesia.” The most dangerous thing for a Christian living in that kind of culture, the one that we're living in, is that you would forget who you are in Christ and forget what you've been given in Christ, because you haven't just been forgiven, you've been given a brand-new identity. And so, Peter wants you to understand the value, the importance, the radical transforming power of understanding your identity in Christ..." - Paul Tripp

Sample Bible Study Group Flow

This is the format we follow as a small group. You can use this as a guide and adjust to the format and flow that works best for your group.
  • 6:00-6:10 pm - Arrive, catch-up, fill out a prayer card. We have found that the group appreciates a little time at the start of the group to briefly catch up when they first arrive. Once the group gets to know each other and spends time praying for each other during the week, they desire a little time to catch up before diving into the study. We also have cards on the table for people to fill out their prayer requests (more info included below on these).
  • 6:10 - 6:15 pm - Worship and prayer. As a group we listen to a worship song to give everyone a few minutes to be still and allow their minds and hearts to prepare for Bible study. At the close of the song, a team member will say a prayer to open the study. A link to a Spotify playlist is included above.
  • 6:15-7:00 pm - Discuss weekly homework. We start by asking for general feedback and thoughts on the week’s reading. We follow that by going through the week’s lesson, sharing responses to the discussion questions. As the leader, you can go through in advance and make note of the questions you want to make sure to discuss as a group.
  • 7:00-7:30 pm - Break for prayer. We want to make sure every person attending the study is prayed over each week. We break into smaller groups of 3-5 to take prayer requests and pray over those requests. Your group may choose to stay in the same smaller break-out group over the course of the study or mix it up week to week. Staying together allows deeper relationships to form over time, but mixing it up helps people better get to know others in the group, so either option has benefits.
  • 7:30 - End of study. Each group member grabs a prayer card filled out by one of their fellow group members on their way out. Everyone will have one group member they are intentionally praying for during the week. Group members include their name and cell number on the prayer card (if they choose to) for the person who gets their card to text them during the week with encouragement and to let them know they are praying for them. We have created some 1 Peter prayer cards that are available above.
