To the angel of the church in Ephesus write…Revelation 2:1a

Jesus dictates letters to seven churches in Asia Minor for John to write and deliver. The letters each contain the Lord’s title (how Jesus refers to Himself), a statement on what the Lord is pleased with (two of the churches don’t have this), a condemnation with what the Lord is upset about (two of the churches don’t have this and one of the churches has two of them), advice on how to get back on track (one church doesn’t have this), and a promised reward for overcoming.

We would be wise to hear what Jesus has to say to these churches – and to us – on areas they (we) might be nailing it and areas they (we) might be missing the mark…

  • Ephesus – Jesus praises their deeds and hard work. They don’t tolerate wicked men while persevering and enduring. But they have left their first love…that deep, passionate, on fire love for the Lord.
  • Smyrna – They have endured afflictions, poverty, and slander. Jesus has no criticism for this persecuted church, telling them to not fear the suffering and to remain faithful, even to death.
  • Pergamum – They are praised for remaining true and not denying their faith while living where Satan has his throne. However, some hold to false teaching, idolatry & immorality. Jesus tells them to repent!
  • Thyatira – Jesus praises their deeds, love, faith, service, and perseverance. However, they tolerate Jezebel, idolatry, and immorality. Jesus says to repent and not hold to false teaching.
  • Sardis – Jesus has nothing to praise this church about. He says they are spiritually dead. Jesus tells them to wake up! To obey and repent.
  • Philadelphia – Jesus praises their deeds; they have kept the word and not denied Him. He has nothing to condemn them for and tells them to hold onto what they have.
  • Laodicea- Jesus has nothing to praise this church about. He says they are lukewarm; neither hot nor cold. Jesus tells them He is standing at the door and knocking… open the door.

Question: Where do you see yourself in any of these church messages?
